Forthcoming changes to NOS Coast Pilot 7 and NGA Pub. 126

US Coast Pilots provide navigation safety information for US waters. NGA Sailing Directions provide similar information for non-US waters.

Currently information concerning certain US possessions in the South Pacific Ocean is contained in both Coast Pilot 7 (Pacific Coast: California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii and Pacific Islands), Chapter 15 and Pub. 126, Sailing Directions (Enroute) Pacific Islands, Sectors 2, 4, and 10.

In order to provide consistency concerning US/non-US waters and to avoid the possibility of conflicting information, the information on the following US possessions and territories will be removed from Pub. 126 and consolidated into Coast Pilot 7:
  1. Palmyra Island (Paragraph 2.3).
  2. Kingman Reef (Paragraph 2.4).
  3. Jarvis Island (Paragraph 2.10).
  4. American Samoa, including Pago Pago (Paragraphs 2.21 to 2.28).
  5. Baker Island (Paragraph 4.12).
  6. Howland Island (Paragraph 4.13).
  7. Wake Island (Paragraph 4.79).
  8. Guam, including Apra Harbor (Paragraphs 10.55 to 10.61).
The change will occur with the announcement of the new edition of Coast Pilot 7 and the simultaneous availability of the updated version of Pub. 126 on the NGA Maritime Safety Information Website, both of which are scheduled to occur in mid-December 2017.

NGA's Hardcopy To Digital Transition Strategy
Since the mid-1990's, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has been working to improve digital navigation product support for the US Navy and other US Government users. The US Navy is transitioning to digital navigation, thus reducing the need for NGA to continue production of hardcopy charts worldwide. Therefore, NGA has begun a gradual transition from hardcopy chart production to a digital data maintenance environment. This notice is to advise mariners, chart agents, and other users of this strategy (See More).
